In search of creativity, you could of course tour the world, but inspiration may also be found closer to home. Perforator found an extraordinary approach to their non-classical electronic music. Marlies van Gangelen and Akim Moiseenkov have introduced the joystick as a fully fledged instrument, including the related range of pre-programmed sounds. In that way, their imaginative compositions have a futuristic touch, without the sound losing credibility. The classically trained Van Gangelen used to play the oboe in the Kyteman Orchestra and collaborated with Nils Frahm, Julia Holter and Damon Albarn. This seems far removed from the broad-minded electronics wizard Akim Moiseenkov, but it does mean that Perforator is greater than the sum of its parts.
